As FDU’s United Nations program coordinator, JoAnne Murphy organizes the United Nations Pathways Lecture Series, providing on-campus lectures by U.N. ambassadors and interactive videoconferences from the United Nations. Murphy also facilitates opportunities for FDU students, faculty and staff to interact with U.N. personnel and programs and U.N.-affiliated nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). In addition, she involves students in U.N. conferences in New York City and around the world. Murphy also represents FDU on the NGO Committee on Indigenous Peoples at the United Nations as well as the NGO Committee on Human Rights and the NGO Committee on Disarmament, Peace and Security. She successfully spearheaded the FDU application to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for special consultative status as an NGO. FDU became the first full university in the history of the United Nations to be recommended by the ECOSOC NGO Committee for this status.

How is the University’s global mission and its commitment to preparing world citizens reflected in your work?
Our global mission is of great interestto me, because it is designed to impactevery aspect of our learning environmentand how we present ourselvesto the communities and the worldbeyond FDU. In my opinion, it is thetype of mission that will truly prepareour youth to serve as future leaders

What do you find mostgratifying about your work?
The students! They give me hope forthe future. They are much more opento all aspects of diversity — culture, language, nationality, ethnicity, genderissues — than previous generations. The world is their “playground” wherethey stretch themselves beyond theirown limitations and prepare themselvesto function as global citizensand well-prepared leaders. They are more open to understandingthe statement by President Obama:“We are all One” — referring to thehuman race. This generation will be wellprepared for future (near-future!)global leadership, I have no doubt. Theimportant message for all of them tounderstand is that global leadershipbegins at home, for our communitiesand neighborhoods now embracepeople of vastly diverse origins whoshare the same American dream.Article end
