Theater! — Part 3
Off the Books

Two weeks later, Hollis and his assistant director, Justine Saliski (a senior and the only theater arts major concentrating in directing), schedule scenes so that the entire cast doesn’t have to be on call for all four hours. At this point, some actors are“off book” — they’ve memorized allor most of their lines and no longerneed to carry the paperback versionof the play with them.

“I had my breakthrough when we went off book,” Angelica Herndon, who plays Julia, says. A sophomore and a third-generation actor, Herndon says she felt she hadn’t developed her character fully until that point, and then “everything came together.”

Meanwhile, Hollis works with freshman Freddie Bourne, who playsthe servant Pantino. As Bourne deliversa line, he raises and lowers hisleft hand. “Freddie, you’re upstagingyourself — all I can see is your hands,”Hollis tells him. “Put all your energyinto the language.”

Bourne, who is in the musical theater concentration, was not going to audition for “Two Gentlemen,” until Morrill advised that it might help him win a spot in the spring 2011 musical. “Acting in the show was definitely a great benefit for me,”he says. “In class, I’m incorporatingmy hands-on experience and whatI’m learning from Professor Hollis.”

Going to the Dogs

The set is nearing completion, and the four lead characters — the star-crossed lovers Proteus and Julia, and Valentine and Sylvia — are rehearsing key scenes. But tonight is the first audition for the dog who will play “Crab,” the scene-stealing companion of Proteus’ servant Launce, played by sophomore James Michaelson.

“I’ve never worked with an animal before,” Michaelson says, “and I have my concerns. What if the dog runs into the audience or goes to the bathroom onstage?” Connor, a handsome German shepherd-greyhound mix, doesn’t realize Michaelson’s worst fears, but he flunks the audition. He is replaced by Harry, an older, calmer golden retriever owned by Richard Turick, chair of the visual and performing arts department.
