Favorite Son: A Cinematic Tale of Loss and Redemption
“F

avorite Son” a film by producer, director and screenwriter Howard Libov, an associate professor of film at Fairleigh Dickinson University, gained critical acclaim on the film festival circuit — with awards including the Remi Gold Award in Drama at the Houston WorldFest International Film Festival and Best Director at the Hoboken Film Festival— and premiered in theaters in 2010.

It also served as a learning lab for digital filmmaking students. Working under the guidance of professionals, FDU students held almost every production role, from wardrobe design to set dresser to camera operator. And, one student, Brian Gonsar, BA’04 (M), served as the film’s producer. The students received academic credit when filming was completed. “That was easily one of the most rewarding aspects of this film,” says Libov, who has taught at FDU since 2000.

Now available on DVD, “Favorite Son” is the story of a 30-year-old loner and minor-league baseball player David Paxton, who returns to his hometown and becomes obsessed with a childhood friend, Joan, and her troubled teenage son, Ross. David struggles to keep his major-league hopes alive, while wrestling with the demons of his past. Libov calls the film “a story of family, dreams deferred and a final chance at redemption.”

The film features actors Pablo Schreiber of HBO’s “The Wire” and Connor Paolo of “Gossip Girl.” In the following scene, Ross (Paolo) leads David (Schreiber) back to his childhood home and torments him with the memories of a tragic day.
