IIn May, Judith Kutzleb, DNP’09 (T), was among the very first recipients of Fairleigh Dickinson University’s new doctor of nursing practice degree. The 40-credit program focuses on preparing clinically expert, fully accountable professionals for leadership roles as clinicians, administrators, executives and educators working to improve health and health care outcomes. Kutzleb is a nurse practitioner in the emergency/trauma department at Hackensack University Medical Center in New Jersey. Her nursing background includes intensive care, emergency room, invasive cardiology and, most recently, trauma and critical care. Kutzleb holds a national certification in critical care nursing, is certified as a nurse practitioner by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and is board certified in adult health and critical care. She also serves as a clinical instructor in FDU’s Henry P. Becton School of Nursing and Allied Health.

What were your experiences as a doctor of nursing practice [DNP] student?
The DNP sets you apart from other nurse practitioners. As you go through the program, you have the ability to immediately apply what you learn — whatever your endeavor or aspirations. You learn to utilize different techniques and thought processes for the benefit of the patient. Fairleigh Dickinson’s DNP program reaches far beyond the hospital setting and the state of New Jersey. The impact includes Third-World countries and ways to make a difference around the world. For example, we learned about how a disease becomes an epidemic, how mobile a disease can become and the massive numbers that can be infected. We learned how to marshal forces to control disease.

Were there any courses you especially enjoyed?
I enjoyed my class in health disparities because it enabled me to focus on the low-income, uninsured minority sector and opened the door for me to participate in the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative, which is a collaboration of retired physicians and nurse practitioners who are building a clinic to provide free care to the uninsured population of Bergen County.

How are you using what you have learned?
I’ve been putting what I learned to work by caring for and managing patients, mentoring and coaching staff nurses and educating future nurse practitioners at FDU.

What is your goal now?
My goal is to concentrate on developing an acute-care rehabilitation service at Hackensack University Medical Center, the second such facility in the nation. This service will provide comprehensive rehabilitation to trauma patients before they transition into an acute-care rehabilitation program. This will hopefully offer more recovery options to many patients.Article end
