Strategic Progress Report - March 2017

Health Sciences

• Henry P. Becton School of Nursing and Allied Health
  • Admitted first cohort to the MSN NP program at the Florham Campus this spring (n=13). Anticipate that enrollment in this program at Florham will increase to nearly 35 students in the fall of 2017.
  • Also anticipate 30 new freshmen in the BSN program at the Florham Campus in the fall, as well as 30 transfer students (sophomores and juniors), half of whom will enroll in the RN to BSN program (those who have completed associate degrees in nursing at a community college).
  • Also anticipate our first cohorts in the new BS in Health Studies program in the fall of 2017, at both the Metropolitan and Florham Campuses.
• School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences
  • Selected as one of New Jersey's Best Places to Work by NJ Biz magazine for the third year in a row.
  • Seeing great student success in the areas of post-graduate fellowships and residencies.
  • Drafted a white paper and plan for launching a public health-focused initiative that incorporates current and future health science programs to address the epidemic of opioid abuse through a holistic and interprofessional approach to treatment, support, and recovery.
  • Signed an additional series of partnership and affiliation agreements, bringing the total number of affiliated partners to more than 300.
  • Engaged another group of students in service learning initiatives through partnerships with Give Kids the World (Kissimmee, Fla.), New Jersey AIDS Services (Morris Plains, N.J.), the Eric Johnson House (Morristown, N.J.), and Morris County Prevention is Key (Dover, N.J.). The success of these student engagements has led to the implementation of service learning as a hallmark requirement for students in our programs.
• Lewis Center for Healthcare Innovation and Technology
  • Began work in collaboration with the Accreditation Commission for Health Care to develop a curriculum and educational resources focused on best practices in sterile compounding.
• New Initiatives
  • Began work on developing a case for accreditation, which is to be submitted as part of the necessary documents to the Commission for Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education.
  • Signed up to bring a team to an upcoming pre-accreditation conference for Physical Therapy Accreditation, which is one of the first steps required to officially launch the DPT program.

International School of Hospitality and Tourism Management

• A major hotel group has agreed to provide a gift of $5 to $5.5 million to support the construction of a new academic facility for the hospitality school and for continuing and executive education at FDU. The new facility is likely to be a wing off the new Campus Union Building on the Metropolitan Campus (close to the new hotel) instead of a new stand-alone facility as first anticipated. This will allow the University to maximize all donations to one facility and to use its own money more prudently.
• Recently hired a program coordinator for the new hospitality program at Wroxton College, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2017. We are anticipating a first class of 20 students. This will be the first full degree program offered at Wroxton College in more than 50 years.
• The renovation plans for the North Arms have been finalized, estimates have been obtained, and a prospective operator has been identified. We will begin a fundraising campaign soon to raise the money to support the cost of the renovations, using the Wroxton Advisory Committee as a primary vehicle.

Silberman College of Business

• By the time we have completed our "Business and Beyond" (B&B) events for prospective students and parents (which are replacing "Experience Your Major Days"), we will have hosted close to 175 students on both New Jersey campuses. The reaction from students and parents has been very positive. In part, the attendance has been high because we have been making calls to admitted students to answer questions and to invite them to these events. This is time-consuming, but it is paying off.
• We held a very successful Virtual Enterprise International (VEI) regional event with over 200 students from New Jersey high schools coming to the Florham Campus to participate in a trade show and business case competition that SCB hosted jointly with the Rothman Institute and VEI.
• In total, the B&B events along with VEI and Junior Achievement events on both New Jersey campuses have brought over 500 New Jersey high school students to our New Jersey campuses. These are all new SCB events that we believe will increase our yield for freshmen beginning in fall 2017.
• We have enrolled a first class of 11 students in our new online M.S. in Digital Marketing program, which was launched in January 2017. This was a good outcome since we only had two months to attract a class following state approval of the program.
• We have enrolled a class of 14 students at Integra Life Sciences for an onsite M.B.A. program. There are potentially 150+ students for onsite graduate programs at Integra and perhaps some will also come to our campus-based Supply Chain Management program or to our new online program in Digital Marketing.
• SCB has once again been included in Eduniversal's rankings of best master's programs. This ranking celebrates academic excellence through the analysis of more than 17,000 programs from 1,000 universities and schools in 154 countries.

School of Public and Global Affairs

• Secured a commitment from a major philanthropic and public service figure to spearhead the effort to raise money for the new School from new donors, and to help recruit members to the Executive Council of the Advisory Board for the new School-members with significant giving capacity.
• Completed the charge to the Executive Council of the Advisory Board to raise $20 million, the profile for Executive Council members, and the charge to the Advisory Committee more broadly.
• Drafted a "Case for Support" for the new School, which is to be used in recruiting prospective donors.
• Began a search for a new Dean in early January 2017. An appointment is anticipated by late March 2017.

School of the Arts

• A cultivation event is planned for May 2017 in NYC-combination of donor prospects and industry influencers.
• Cultivation events in Los Angeles and San Francisco are planned for June 2017-combination of donor prospects and industry influencers.
• Proposals for new graduate programs in Film and Animation have been submitted to the Deans' Council for review and consideration.
• New connections have been forged with the Whitney Museum, Direct TV, MWW P.R., New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, and other potential student internship sites.
• Curriculum for a new course in Entrepreneurship for students in the arts is in final review and should be ready to pilot in fall 2017.
• A School of the Arts-specific section of UNIV 1002, Preparing for Professional Life, is in preparation and should be ready to pilot in spring 2018.

New Science Facility on Florham Campus

• In late December 2016, the University Provost led a group from FDU to tour two interdisciplinary science buildings in NYC. The buildings each included flexible open lab spaces, core instrumentation for multiple disciplines, and open meeting spaces to facilitate collaborative discussions-all features that we plan to include in our new Science building on the Florham Campus.

University Advancement

• Private and Endowed Scholarships
  • Submitted a $50,000 request to Allergan Pharmaceuticals to support undergraduate scholarships.
  • Received a $50,000 scholarship from a trustee and spouse.
  • Received a $43,000 scholarship from an alumna.
  • Second Annual Scholarship Dinner to be held on February 28, 2017 with more than 60 donors and nearly 120 students expected to attend.
• Private Giving to University
  • Giving is down slightly (3%), year-to-date through January 31, 2017, but we anticipate a significant move upwards through the remainder of the year. Two donors have notified the University that they have included FDU in their estate plans for $1.5 million and $500,000, respectively.
• Alumni Donors
  • Alumni donors, year-to-date through January 31, 2017, have decreased by 96, although total donors have increased by 432, most notably an increase of 128 new employee donors.
• Capital Campaign
  • Campaign co-chairs, Mike Moss and Chris Johnson, have been recruited. We are in the process of securing leadership gifts and commitments from all members of the Board of Trustees and other top prospects, as well as recruiting for the Campaign Steering Committee. We have officially entered the quiet phase of the campaign, with early commitments totaling nearly $9.5 million.
• Alternative Models for Fundraising
  • We are moving forward with Give Campus, a product that will enhance the University's social media presence respective to fundraising. Launch date is late April 2017 in concert with the 42 Hours of Giving initiative.

New Strategic Initiatives

• OO4.1 - We are in the midst of a deep analysis of all programs, including SWOT and cost analyses. Once completed in late spring 2017, we will be poised to study the effectiveness of each of our programs, including the costs and revenues generated, thus positioning us to make data-driven decisions regarding streamlining, eliminating, or growing programs.
• OO6.1 - We expect to increase our revenue streams through increased online offerings. To this end, we are researching the option of partnering with an external vendor in this arena. We have or will soon be meeting with each of the following vendors: Noodle Partners, Pearson Education, Wiley, Academic Partnerships, and Keypath. We will then select the most appropriate vendor for our needs and move forward with selecting appropriate programs, such as the Master of Health Science, Master of Administrative Science, and BA in Individualized Studies for fully online offering.
