Up Close with Ramatu Musa, BA'09 (T)

Ramatu Musa, who was born in Sierra Leone an has since become a U.S. citizen, is the first FDU student in recent history to be awarded a Fulbright scholarship. The Fulbright Program, run by the U.S. Department of State, is an international educational exchange program designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and those from other countries.

During a Fulbright orientation in Washington, D.C., this past summer, the incoming class of scholars was “reminded that Fulbright alumni include heads of states, ambassadors, CEOs, university presidents, prominent artists and journalists, 39 Nobel Prize winners and 65 Pulitzer Prize winners,” Musa relates. “Clearly, we all have very tough acts to follow.”

Musa has entered an intellectual echelon filled with a broad array of talented minds. Fellow scholars she met at orientation included “young graduates who were going to study organisms with unpronounceable names in Kenya, camel racing in India, the economic crisis in Dubai, thermodynamics in Tel Aviv, post-trauma counseling with women in Sierra Leone, South-Asian migrant workers in Jerusalem and English-teaching in Jordan.”

Musa is studying “Sheba’s Legacy: The Young Women of Beta Israel,” at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Through the examination of the lives of successful women in the Ethiopian Jewish community, she hopes to identify the conditions that contribute to their achievements.

In preparation for a career in foreign policy, after her Fulbright study, Musa hopes to become fluent in French, Spanish, Bambara (an indigenous African language), Portuguese and Hebrew in addition to studying social anthropology and law.
