Athletics Accomplishments

 

Division I — The Knights

• The women’s bowling team earns FDU’s first-ever National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) title in 2006.

• The Knights men’s soccer team advances to the Elite 8 in the 2001 NCAA tournament. The Knights also see NCAA tournament action in 2003 and 2008.

• The men’s tennis squad wins back-to-back NEC tournament championships in 2007 and 2008 and participates in the respective NCAA tournaments.

• Head Coach Dennis Sasso earns his 300th win at FDU in 2001. In 2004, Sasso — and his number 13 — are retired with more than 340 career wins.

• The 2005 NEC tournament champion Knights men’s basketball team advances to the first round of the NCAA tournament.

• FDU fencers compete in NCAA championships in 2003, 2004 and 2009.

• Eric Too represents the men’s cross country squad at the NCAA championships in 2002.

• The Division I athletics program adds four new women’s sports: soccer in 2000, softball in 2001, bowling in 2002 and golf in 2006.

Division III — The Devils

• The Devils men’s golf team wins four straight Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) Freedom Conference championships in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, qualifying for the NCAA tournament in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

• Coach Roger Kindel is named Freedom Conference Golf Coach of the Year four times.

• The women’s lacrosse squad wins the MAC championship and qualifies for the NCAA tournament in 2008.

• The Devils baseball team wins the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Region championship in 2002 and 2004.

• The Devils men’s basketball team wins the ECAC Metro Region championship in 1999.

• The women’s lacrosse team wins the ECAC South Region championships in 2006.

• The women’s soccer team wins the ECAC Metro Region championship in 2005.

• The men’s lacrosse squad wins the MAC championship in 2009, advancing to the first round of the NCAA tournament.
