WFDU-FM first went live on August 30, 1971, and was
transmitted from the historic Armstrong Tower in
Alpine, N.J,, the site of the world’s first FM radio station.
The tower was built by scientific genius Major Edwin H. Armstrong,
inventor of a number of circuits that helped improve transmission and
reception of AM radio. He also developed FM radio, which improved the
sound and fidelity of speech and music and eliminated static.
As part of his early experimentation, Armstrong built the tower to test
his inventions and eventually serve as the transmitter of his first station.
Located atop of New Jersey’s Palisades, the tower rises more than 400 feet
above ground level, in addition to already being 400 feet above the Hudson
River. From this height, WFDU can reach a 50-mile radius from the tower’s
location, serving the New York metropolitan area and New Jersey. WFDU is
now the only FM station that transmits daily from the Armstrong Tower.
