The University Core

Fairleigh Dickinson University is renowned among higher education institutions for its University Core curriculum, which provides a common formative experience for all students. Now in its 15th year, FDU’s Core program has been a model for others throughout the country. The curriculum consists of four interdisciplinary courses with an emphasis on global understanding. It is designed to provide students with a common base of knowledge; develop essential skills in written communication, reading and logical analysis; promote an understanding of individual and societal perspectives; and foster an international perspective on the world as well as on students’ own countries.

Now in its 15th year, FDU’s Core program has been a model for others throughout the country.

University Core A — The Global Challenge, offered only online, probes global issues and helps prepare students for living on an increasingly interconnected globe. It also provides a common introduction to the Internet as an educational tool. The second course in the Core sequence, University Core B — Perspectives on the Individual, examines what it means to be an individual within this global context. University Core C — Cross-cultural Perspectives reminds students that they live in a world of many cultures, each with its own set of distinctive values and societal structures. Finally, University Core D — The American Experience: The Quest for Freedom asks students to reflect on what it means to be living in the United States in the global age.
